Cyber Wellness Talk

On thursday, we had a level talk on the topic of cyber wellness by Mr Poh. During the talk, Mr Poh mentioned that kids nowadays cant seem to live without their phones as kids tend to bring their phones everywhere they go.  Cyber addiction to phones has a great impact on people, especially students like us. Students tend to be less efficient when they have their phones with them and they woud be inclined to checking their phones whenever there is an notification. Mr Poh too talked about multi tasking (task switching). Many of us tend to task switch when we do our stuff, thinking that by doing so, we are able to complete more stuff in the limited amount of time. However, the fact was that students completed even lesser stuff than they would have completed in that period of time.

This talk is very relatable to our lives and it is very beneficial. What are some of your insights after listening to the talk?

  1. As for me, I usually can focus on my homework and other work that I might have, ignoring any distractions going on. Either that, or I do my work in a quiet environment that I work best in. Sometimes I do wonder why some people sleep as late as they are, and how I can usually manage to sleep before 10.30pm. I do admit that some people have that much work to do before going to bed, but I feel that this is one of the prime reasons as to why classmates sleep so late. I do feel that I am at least a semi-decent multi-tasker, but I do not try to do so unless circumstances force me to.

  2. I find that the talk is very useful. From his presentation, I have learnt that we, the majority, cannot multitask. Even if we do so, we will not end up having more time but 40% lesser time for leisure purposes. Also, multitasking will result in us not being able to concentrate and focus. Hence, I feel that k should try to minimise doing activities that engage the act of multitasking such as checking my phone frequently when doing homework and listening to music with lyrics etc.

  3. It is true that multitasking will not make us more efficient, but rather more inefficient as we take a longer time to complete tasks. The proliferation in the usage of smartphones while completing a task does indeed hinder our progress on our actual task as we slowly move away from doing the task and end up spending a long time on our smartphones. Improvements in technology have made social media an essential part of many of our lives, and smartphones enable us to use these social media conveniently. However, this has made us multitask more frequently as we tend to use our smartphones while doing work. After the talk by Mr Poh, I realised that it does indeed slow us down in doing our work and we should concentrate on doing our work so that we have more free time at the end of the day. I will try to put away my phone when doing my work because I am one of the many people who always use my phone as I do my work, resulting in 'multitasking'. This talk served as a wake up call and made me see the cause of my inefficiency.

  4. For the task switching, i believe that i do not do it very often, but i admit doing it sometimes. Before the talk, like what Mr Poh said, i do believe that i was able to do more stuff in the same period of time. But now, i know otherwise. From now on, i will try to concerntrate on one work and not do other stuff until i finish it. I also find myself not very good in multitasking. Therefore i should learn how to concerntrate on one work at a time. Mr Poh also mentioned about choosing the right song for working. What he said might be correct, but i find that i can also focus on my homework even when I'm playing pop songs. I believe that as long as you can control yourself from getting distracted by the song, playing any song would be fine.

  5. From the talk, I am able to learn multiple ways to improve my learning and the main learning point I have gained from the talk is that unless you are a multitasking genius, you will complete less by multitasking as your brain will need to switch back and forth between information. Hence, by doing one thing at a time, you will be able to do more.
